Lane Narrowing and Sidewalk Widening, Sunny Isles Beach, FL

MEI master planned and designed major roadway and streetscape improvements along Sunny Isles Boulevard (163rd/167th Street) to create a pedestrian-friendly, landscaped and beautified gateway into the City of Sunny Isles Beach. This on time and on budget project created a streetscape with European charm on Sunny Isles Boulevard from the Intracoastal Waterway to Collins Avenue  (A1A).

Master Plan Phase: When the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) informed City officials of a plan to resurface and make drainage improvements to the road, the City offered to contribute to the project to add traffic calming and beautification. MEI created a Master Plan for improvements that inspired the developer of a major mixed use building along the south side of Sunny Isles Boulevard to create ground floor retail space for a popular café that operates 18-hours a day, 7-days a week and activates the corridor with several sidewalk café tables under decorative umbrellas.

Design Phase: MEI redesigned a long-neglected, speedway-like road and redesigned it into a world-class streetscape. Traffic lanes were narrowed to 11 feet, which created space for adding sidewalks at least seven feet wide on each side of the road. Trees and landscaping was planted along the new sidewalks made of brick pavers. Drainage, lighting and other improvements completed this successful project.

Public Involvement Plan: MEI worked throughout the process to achieve consensus among all the stakeholders while coordinating approvals with both FDOT and Miami-Dade County. Created from public input, the carefully designed streetscape has primed the pump for appropriately-scaled redevelopment of the aging neighborhood commercial corridor along the north side of Sunny Isles Boulevard.
